Chris had to arrest Natasha.

“Should I tell the escort to turn around?” A fellow agent stood by his side, his own phone at the ready. “They can head back in there and make the arrest.”

He needed to make the right call, but what was the right call? Natasha had been through enough, and her daughter was still missing. Even with a match on ballistics and residue, it didn’t prove that Natasha had killed her fellow astronaut. The timeline didn’t make sense...but the truth remained that Natasha was still missing a significant portion of her memories, and the coroner’s office had made an initial estimate on Cobie May’s time of death, placing it a few hours before he’d found Natasha up to a few hours after they’d been together. The estimate for Dr. Evans’s time of death had been placed after that time period, making it look even more like a suicide—as if he’d either seen May’s body or found out about her death some other way, then gone home and performed his final, fatal act out of despair.

It wasn’t looking good for Natasha, but Chris knew there had to be a reasonable explanation. Twelve years was a long time, though. How much do I really know this woman? She certainly seems to have changed...and she’s not even the same woman now as she was yesterday morning, right after losing her memories.

“Agent Barton. What are your orders?”

Physical guilt tore through Chris. He couldn’t send someone else to arrest Natasha, not with her health issues and her daughter missing. The mental taxation of an arrest on top of everything else could do irreparable damage. Even if she was guilty of May’s death, that was no excuse to do further harm to her health if at all avoidable. That wasn’t how the justice system worked.

“Leave it,” he told the other agent. “I’ll make the arrest personally, as soon as we have a lead on Hayley Stark. The astronauts will be secure at NASA and under watchful eyes there. They’re not going anywhere.”

“But, Agent Barton—”

“I’ll take the heat on this, Parker. Anyone questions my actions, send them right to me and I’ll pull up ten reasons why we’re delaying on making an arrest. It’ll happen, but we have a missing child to find, and her mother is at a secure government facility. She’s not a danger to herself or others, and she’s not going to run while her child’s whereabouts are unaccounted for. Understand?”

Parker nodded and walked away, appearing perturbed. Chris didn’t particularly care how the other agents felt about it—this was his case, and he’d handle Natasha how he chose. And as soon as Hayley was safe, he’d find a way to explain the ballistics report.

His plan was easier made than accomplished, however. Two hours later, after searching the school grounds, the Starks’ house and contacting the Kaifs and grilling them for a half hour regarding their relationship with Natasha and Hayley, he and the other agents were no closer to finding Hayley.
